Prevention

Aiken Center for Alcohol and Other Drug Services Prevention Services Division continues its efforts of helping individuals, families and the community to access the resources needed to develop and maintain healthy lifestyles. We implement comprehensive substance abuse prevention programs that are evidence-based, effective, and research-validated for elementary, middle and high school youth. We conduct educational prevention programs in schools and throughout the community to build protective factors and to reduce risk factors for alcohol, tobacco and other drug abuse.

Elementary and middle school (Grade 5-8)

LifeSkills Training is an evidence-based program that promotes healthy alternatives to risky behavior through activities designed to:

  • Increase their knowledge of the immediate consequences of substance use.
  • Teach students the necessary skills to resist social (peer) pressures to smoke, drink and use substances.
  • Help students to develop greater self-esteem and self-confidence.

Elementary school (Grade 4)

Too Good for Drugs is an evidence-based prevention program focused on:

  • Developing personal and interpersonal skills to resist peer pressures
  • Goal setting
  • Decision making
  • Having respect for self and others
  • Effective communication skills
  • Managing emotions

Palmetto Retailers Education Program (PREP) is a short course that helps reduce underage access to alcohol and tobacco products in our communities, while also lowering the liability risks for businesses and their employees. The goal of PREP is to provide managers and servers/seller with the knowledge and skills to comply with state-, community- and establishment-level alcohol and tobacco policies, and to avoid the potential consequences of failing to comply with these policies.

Parent education program: Parenting workshops that offer a unique combination of information, skill building, and support. Workshops are held at Parenting Centers in Aiken County.

Tobacco use prevention: Workshops on the effects of tobacco use implemented at after-school programs, summer camps (such as Smoking Stinks) and Vacation Bible School.

Alcohol and drug awareness: A wide range of prevention activities and events including the Fatal Vision Goggle activity; intended to give facts about the effects of alcohol, tobacco and other drug use.
