The South Carolina
Alcohol and Drug Safety Action Program
(ADSAP)
What is ADSAP?
The South Carolina Alcohol and Drug Safety Action Program (ADSAP) is a statewide initiative designed to reduce the incidence of driving under the influence (DUI) and other alcohol- and drug-related offenses. ADSAP provides mandatory education, intervention, and treatment services for individuals convicted of DUI or other related offenses, aiming to promote public safety and support individuals in making positive changes to their behaviors and lifestyles.
Who Needs to Participate in ADSAP?
Participation in ADSAP is mandatory for:
- Individuals convicted of driving under the influence (DUI or DUAC).
- Individuals whose driving privileges have been suspended or revoked due to an implied consent or BAC violation.
- Individuals seeking to regain their driving privileges after a DUI related offense.
Components of ADSAP
Orientation: Upon entering the program, participants are given an ADSAP orientation designed to help them understand the requirements, responsibilities, and processes of ADSAP.
Assessment and Evaluation: Participants undergo a comprehensive assessment to evaluate their alcohol and drug use patterns. This assessment helps determine the appropriate level of intervention and/or treatment required.
Education Classes: ADSAP includes educational sessions that cover the risks and consequences of alcohol and drug use, especially in relation to driving. These classes aim to increase awareness and encourage safer, healthier choices.
Individual and Group Counseling: Based on the assessment, participants may be required to attend individual or group counseling sessions. These sessions provide support and address underlying issues contributing to substance use, helping individuals develop coping strategies and prevent relapse.
Treatment Services: For those identified as needing more intensive intervention, ADSAP offers structured treatment services. These services may include outpatient therapy, intensive outpatient programs, or residential treatment, depending on the individual’s needs.
Benefits of ADSAP
Regain Driving Privileges: Successful completion of ADSAP is a key step towards regaining your driving privileges after a DUI conviction or suspension.
Reduced Recidivism: ADSAP aims to reduce repeat offenses by addressing the root causes of alcohol and drug misuse and promoting long-term behavioral change.
Improved Safety: By educating participants on the dangers of impaired driving and supporting their recovery, ADSAP contributes to overall public safety on the roads.
Personal Growth: Participants gain valuable insights into their behaviors and develop healthier coping mechanisms, leading to improved overall well-being.
